Position Overview
The Operations Director will work with the AFT Vermont Board and the AFT Vermont management team to:
- Manage HR functions, including hiring, onboarding, enhancing staff support systems, benefits administration, and supervision/evaluation structures
- Execute day-to-day financial operations, including invoicing, budgeting, tracking, and annual financial reporting
- Manage tech platforms, including training and supporting staff and members, regularly assessing systems and providing updates as needed
- Support the AFT Vermont Board with meetings, logistics, trainings, and biennial convention
- Assist in creating and implementing systematic staff and member training and education
Essential Functions
Administration (10%)
- Manage day-to-day administrative operations, systems, records, contracts, vendors, and office needs.
- Develop and maintain efficient organizational processes, procedures, and systems.
- Support staff and leadership with administrative projects, problem-solving, and compliance.
Finance (25%)
- Manage day-to-day financial transactions, including accounts payable, reimbursements, deposits, and payroll coordination.
- Maintain accurate financial records, budgeting, and financial reporting.
- Coordinate with bookkeeper, treasurer, auditor, bank, and other financial service providers to maintain consistent record keeping and compliance.
Human Resources (25%)
- Coordinate hiring, onboarding, offboarding, benefits, payroll, leave, and personnel records.
- Maintain and update HR policies, procedures, and systems, in alignment with staff union contract.
- Support supervisors and staff with questions, regular check-ins and evaluations, and performance management.
Technology (20%)
- Manage organizational technology systems, software, equipment, accounts, and vendors.
- Train and support staff and members on all technology platforms (Powerbase, Hustle, Google Suites, Formstack, Action Network, etc)
- Identify and implement technology solutions that improve efficiency, accessibility, and security.
Training (10%)
- Coordinate staff training, professional development, staff days, and organization wide training opportunities.
- Work with the Training Committee to develop and implement training materials, onboarding, and support systems for staff and members.
Board Support (10%)
- Provide administrative and logistical support to the Board and Board leadership.
- Coordinate Board meetings, onboarding and training.
- Support Board Treasurers in setting up new locals, consistent record keeping, and annual reporting.
Qualifications
Three years experience in three or more of the following:
- Experience with Labor Unions (or non-profits committed to racial and/or social justice)
- Experience managing financial operations and annual reporting
- Experience with human resources (hiring, onboarding, supporting staff & management)
- Experience with supporting a Board (union or non-profit)
- Experience operating and supporting others with software tools (Google Suites, Powerbase, Hustle, Action Network, Quickbooks, etc)
Compensation: This position is based in Burlington, Vermont with occasional statewide travel. The salary range is $76,000-$90,000 a year depending on experience. This is a management position.

Position Overview
The purpose of the position of Field Rep/Organizer is to support elected leaders, build leadership, and organize members to build power in their workplaces and communities in order to advance the interests of our members and the broader working class. Field Rep/Organizers support workers where they are, including phone calls, worksite visits, and occasional evening and weekend meetings – this unique role allows for flexibility for organizers to build their own schedule around workers’ needs as well as their own.
We are looking for a team member who has:
- Experience as a union organizer (internal or external) or a union member/leader
- A history of taking initiative
- A class based analysis, an understanding of power and how racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism and other forms of oppression divide workers from their collective power.
- The ability to work independently, solve problems, manage time and priorities
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, take direction & support elected union leaders
- The ability to lead and train colleagues
- Strong listening, speaking and written communication skills
- The ability to learn our database and communication tools
- An automobile and valid driver’s license (required)
Salary & Benefits
This position is covered by a union contract. Per the contract, the salary range for this position will be $60,069-$89,671 depending on experience.
